Learn How To Use Oracle Analytic Functions |
SQL is a language that allows you to perform queries to answer a wide range of questions about your data. While standard SQL is quite powerful, there are many questions that it cannot answer at all or that it can only answer with complex and inefficient SQL workarounds. Questions about running totals, percent of total, and ranking within a group fall into this area. Also, more complex issues such as Top-N within a group and aggregates over a range also fall in this arena. These questions can be easily answered via a new class of SQL statements called Analytic Functions. This presentation will show you how to use Oracle's Analytic Function extensions to SQL to answer these questions simply and efficiently. Want to learn more Oracle? Groovy dramatically simplifies Java development, and also brings modern language concepts like builders, closures, and metaprogramming to existing Java systems. The purpose of this session is to demonstrate both how Groovy makes Java development quicker and easier, and also to show some of Groovy's more advanced features. The capabilities illustrated will include:

This training provides you with a technical introduction to the Database Replay utility, which can capture a real workload and replay that workload against a test system. (Note that in this presentation Chuck delivers a live demo of database replay and encounters an error with the capture process. Per Chuck "....having saved the previous capture files into a sub-directory was the problem. Even though the capture files were moved out of the default directory, the fact that there was a sub-directory there was enough to make the capture job FAIL!") SQL Tuning: Analyzing Oracle SQL Execution Plans |
An Oracle SQL execution plan is a vital component in diagnosing performance issues with sql statements. One of the challenges faced by Oracle developers and DBA's alike is how to use execution plan to focus efforts. Searching for specific operations or access paths may shift your the focus away from the real issue and waste your time making changes that have little positive impact. Using the foundation of the Throwaway Method and Response Time-based tuning, this session shows how to look for inefficiencies in statement processing and how to identify operations that contribute the most to the overall response time. Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) |
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) is Oracle's premier clustering product. RAC provides both scalability and availability by allowing multiple instances to simultaneously access the same database. As with most technology, RAC is not a solution for every scenario. Some applications scale well with RAC and others don't scale as well. Some examples of different configuration options and architectures will be provided. This will allow you to decide if RAC might be right for your system. Presenter: Edward Whalen Language: English |

Understanding and Using PL/SQL Arrays and Bulk Processing |
PL/SQL is Oracle's procedural language extension to SQL. It is functionally similar to SQL Server and Sybase's Transact SQL, but much more powerful. The strength of PL/SQL and similar language extensions to SQL is that they are much more flexible than SQL. Their weakness is their performance. Oracle has addressed this weakness via PL/SQL's support of PL/SQL Arrays and Bulk Processing. For many applications traditional PL/SQL requires us to process one row at a time. With Arrays and Bulk Processing many of these same applications can be easily rewritten to process many rows at a time. Additionally, Arrays allow us to build in-memory tables which are designed to avoid repeated SQL queries. Both techniques can lead to significant improvement in PL/SQL performance. In this presentation we review various scenarios where PL/SQL is required. We then demonstrate the traditional PL/SQL solutions, and how to convert the traditional slower PL/SQL code to much faster code using PL/SQL Arrays and Bulk Processing. Understanding and Using XML |
XML, the eXtensible Markup Language, is a universal language for describing data. XML is somewhat similar to HTML but addresses a much broader purpose and is therefore far more powerful and useful. In short, XML provides a common data format that all applications can share. In this presentation, we review the many uses of XML in application design and demonstrate how to create an XML document. Once created, we examine how to automatically validate your XML document using both DTD schemas and XSchemas. Additionally, we describe and give examples of how XML Stylesheets are used to convert XML to HTML for presentation in a browser. This presentation will give you a solid foundation in how XML is used in developing modern software applications. Presenter: Geoff Wiland Language: English |

Effective Use of Oracle SQL Trace |
Extended SQL Trace is one of the most effective diagnostic tools for Oracle. When done properly, tracing reveals exactly what calls a user session is making and eliminates guess work when addressing performance issues. This presentation focuses on real life experience with lightly documented issues and covers how to properly trace a user session, wait events, trace file architecture and how to read it, and summarizing session activity using profiling tools. We finish with several test cases demonstrating the usefulness of sql trace to diagnose session, sql, system and architecture issues. Presenter: Daniel Fink specializes in Oracle performance diagnosis and optimization, monitoring and data recovery. He has been in IT for over 17 years, first as a Cobol programmer on the Vax VMS platform. In 1995, he transitioned to Oracle, first as a developer, then DBA...on DEC Alpha OpenVMS and Oracle Parallel Server 7.0.13. He has been both a development and production DBA (often at the same time). For the past 5 years, Daniel has focused on Oracle performance diagnosis and optimization. He has been a member of the Oak Table Network (www.oaktable.net) since 2004. Daniel has presented at conferences and user group meetings across the United States and Europe, including RMOUG Training Days, The Hotsos Symposium, IOUG-A Live!, UKOUG, Miracle dbForums in Denmark and Scotland. XML in Oracle |
This 90-minute XML in Oracle presentation describes the primary features of Oracle10g Release 2 XML DB. XML DB is an Oracle product that provides high performance XML storage and retrieval capabilities. Data can be stored in XML tables, in columns of standard Oracle tables, in Oracle's XML Repository, or in XML documents stored external to the Oracle database. With XML DB, Oracle now combines the capabilities and advantages of Oracle relational databases with the capabilities and advantages of XML. Features such as the XMLType datatype, structured versus unstructured XML storage, schema registration, XQuery, and the XML Repository are described.
