SQL is a language that allows you to perform queries to answer a wide range of questions about your data. While standard SQL is quite powerful, there are many Business Intelligence questions that standard aggregate functions cannot answer at all or would require very complex and inefficient SQL statements. Questions about running totals, percent of total, and ranking within a group fall into this area. Also, more complex BI queries such as Top-N within a group and aggregates over a range also fall in this arena.
