OCI Foundations: Getting Started Class
In this 8 hour instructor-led class you will learn – through demonstrations and hands-on workshops – how to build an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) environment to support database-driven web applications.
This class will get you over the initial hump, to a point where you can build and administer an OCI environment to support database-driven web applications using Oracle Database and Apache.
APEX Administrators might be interested in the suggested next course, Oracle APEX Administration.
Watch instructor John Watson discuss the course objectives and the workshop (i.e. what the students build in our OCI Foundations class).
Pros and Cons of Moving to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
For many Oracle users, there are two huge motivators for moving to OCI:
First, the administration workload for on-prem systems is far greater than that for an equivalent OCI environment.
Second, cost savings. When you compare the pricing of infrastructure plus Database licences in OCI with that for on-prem, you need a very good reason not to go cloud.
And there is one demotivator: learning to use OCI. At first sight, OCI looks horribly complicated. And indeed there is a learning curve which we will help with in this class!
The Environment Students Will Build
The final architecture (depending on what exercises students choose to complete) will be something like this:
The course is presented in two blocks of four hours. These are lectures, demonstrations, and discussion. Exercises in building the environment will be done outside of class, either in the student’s own OCI account or in compartments created in a Skillbuilders OCI account.
Prerequisite Knowledge
This course is targeted at those who will be administering or working with an OCI environment. It is suitable for any person with a technical background (system administrators, developers, DBAs, IT Management) that has familiarity with networking and Linux system administration (working from the command line). A basic understanding of Cloud computing is helpful.
What’s Next?
Attend our Oracle APEX Administration class to learn how to install, configure and manage a secure, production-quality APEX environment that supports internal AND public-facing internet applications.
Technical Requirements
Nothing is required to do the exercises (workshops). Optionally, students can pre-register for an OCI account. An OCI environment will be provided if needed.
Modest PC or Mac specs are required to connect to the online class. Detailed specs can be found here.
Also, we recommend using two monitors for this class. This provides the convenience of having one monitor for the instructor’s presentation and another for your workshop.
