Beyond Data Guard for Failover: Data Guard for Performance and Reduced Licensing Costs
The headline usage case for Data Guard is a physical standby in mount mode, to enable zero data loss. Excellent stuff! But Data Guard can do a lot more than that. A snapshot standby can be your test or dev system, open read-write without compromising the data loss objective. A logical standby, optimized for big queries, is a perfect near-real-time data warehouse. And if you have the Active Data Guard license, then many more possibilities open up. Judicious use of the various Data Guard options can improve the performance seen by your users and perhaps reduce your license footprint by reducing the need to license additional machines or processors.
